Chapter Thirteen

Alessandro

I made it back to my dorm with enough time to shower the smell of sex off my skin. I lay down in bed and closed my eyes in exhaustion afterward. My fucking shoulder hurt. I heard the knock at our dorm and braced myself. Marino let him in. I couldn’t hear what was said but the knock on my bedroom door told me it was a very short conversation.

I sat up slightly.

“Come in.”

Mr. Xavier entered the room. He’d been in here the last time I’d caused trouble. Hopefully this visit would turn out better. I never fooled myself about the cards he held. Where he got that power, I had no idea.

Xavier always wore perfectly tailored, expensive dark suits. His muscles didn’t bulge but you knew they were there. He was a large man and made the room smaller. His face held the exact expression I’d seen each time I’d faced him.

I know what you’re thinking.

I swear he did. I’d lied during our previous meeting, and he’d immediately called me on it. His expression and voice never changed. It was hard not to wonder who the fuck he was. He didn’t look Italian—Hispanic possibly. Dealing with him was our consequence.

Students who were removed permanently from campus never spoke about what happened with Xavier. There was not a single rumor about the man I could substantiate. Even Marino’s father told me to back the fuck off when I tried to get answers. Mr. Xavier was a Rochester code of silence.

“I hoped another talk wasn’t in your cards,” he said calmly after he closed the door.

He never said more than necessary. His tone never changed. His job was to put the fear of God into us and it worked. It also pissed me off.

“I think you simply enjoy coming to my bedroom,” I said in a nasty tone.

His eyebrows shot up and it was the first noticeable reaction I’d received from him after three years. He looked around the room, walked over and snagged the chair at my desk, and carried it to my bedside. He situated himself, watching me the entire time.

“Mr. Brambilla,” he began. “Let’s cut the shit. You spent the morning with Giovanna Rossi. I will not ask what you were doing.”

I may not have gulped but my damn nuts pulled up.

I waited.

“Did you know Matteo Romano had a weapon before the fight began?”

“Rings.”

“Did you know he had a razor blade attached to one ring?”

“When I started bleeding.”

“Did you have a weapon?”

“I didn’t need one.” My eyes burned into his and I rolled slightly so I could prop myself on my forearm.

“Will Mr. Romano cause a problem if he returns to school?”

I had to think about this one.

“No.”

“Is this fight settled?”

“On my end.”

“You don’t have another chance, and neither will Mr. Romano. Is that understood?”

“I heard you the last time.”

He had his hand around my throat before I took another breath. His cool expression never changed.

“You’re a smart-ass, Mr. Brambilla. Don’t be a dumbass.”

His grip was rock hard.
